Deep coral red in a tall, curvy glass, smelling of passion fruit and orange. It tastes like a holiday, but two measures of rum make it a drink to take slowly.

Hurricane
Taste
Fruity and tangy with passion fruit, lime and orange over a rich rum base. Sweet, bright and strong.
History and origin
The Hurricane is inseparable from Pat O'Brien's, the bar in the French Quarter of New Orleans. According to the bar's own account, it was created there in the 1940s, when whiskey was scarce and distributors made bars take large amounts of rum in order to get other spirits. To use up the rum, the bar mixed it with passion fruit and other juices and served it in glasses shaped like hurricane lamps, which gave the drink its name.
The Hurricane became a symbol of New Orleans nightlife and Mardi Gras. Its reputation suffered from bright red premixes, but made with fresh juice and real passion fruit it is a well-balanced tropical sour.
Bartender tips
Real passion fruit purée or a good syrup is essential; it is the signature flavor.
Leave out the grenadine entirely if your passion fruit syrup is already sweet and colorful.
Serve it on crushed ice for a more tropical, faster-chilling version.
Variations
Pat O'Brien's style
The bar's own version is made with rum and its house passion fruit mix, which is sweeter and redder.
Jamaican rum twist
Easy twist: use an aged Jamaican rum as the dark rum for more funk and depth.
