Shape and purpose
A hurricane glass has a short stem or foot and a tall bowl that curves in and out, similar to the glass chimney of a hurricane lamp. It usually holds about 400 to 600 ml. The size gives room for crushed ice, fruit garnishes and blended drinks.
Which drinks belong here
The Hurricane (rum, passion fruit and citrus), tropical rum punches, the Piña Colada, frozen fruit drinks and many colourful long drinks.
Tips
- Fill the glass generously with ice, preferably crushed, so the drink stays cold and the volume is not all alcohol.
- Garnish with fruit such as an orange slice and a cherry, a pineapple wedge or an umbrella.
- Serve with a straw.
- Keep an eye on strength: tropical recipes can contain several spirits, and a large glass makes it easy to underestimate them.
