Orange and pink grapefruit give this drink its juicy base, passion fruit adds a tropical perfume and almond syrup a soft, round sweetness. A touch of grenadine turns it the colour of its namesake.

Flamingo
Taste
Juicy orange and tart grapefruit with tropical passion fruit and a soft almond sweetness. Fresh, fruity and gently sweet.
History and origin
The Flamingo belongs to the family of shaken fruit mocktails that bars in German-speaking countries put on their menus for guests who wanted more than orange juice without alcohol. The recipe follows the same logic as a tropical cocktail: a juice base, a sour element, and syrups for sweetness and aroma.
There is no known creator, and several different drinks are sold under the name. What they share is the pink colour and a fruity, easy-drinking profile. This version uses plenty of juice so that it fills a highball glass and the syrups do not dominate.
Bartender tips
Freshly squeezed orange and grapefruit juice make the drink much livelier than carton juice.
Pour the grenadine in last, straight into the glass, if you want a pink gradient instead of an even colour.
Too sweet? Add 5 ml more lemon juice or a splash of soda water.
Variations
Flamingo Spritz (twist)
Top with 50 ml soda water or an alcohol-free sparkling wine for a lighter, fizzy version.
Flamingo with raspberries
Muddle four raspberries in the shaker before adding the other ingredients and double strain.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Flamingo alcohol-free?
Yes. All ingredients are juices and syrups, so it contains no alcohol.
Can I replace the orgeat?
Yes, with vanilla syrup or simple syrup. You will lose the almond note, but the drink stays balanced.
Can I prepare it for a party?
Yes. Mix juices and syrups in a jug, keep it cold and shake single portions with ice before serving.
