Blueberry Mojito

Crushed blueberries tint the drink a deep violet and add a soft, jammy sweetness. Mint, lime and white rum stay in charge, so it still drinks like a proper Mojito, just a little fruitier.

Blueberry Mojito

Taste

Cool mint and sharp lime, with jammy blueberry and a soft sweetness. Light, fizzy and very refreshing.

History and origin

The Mojito is a Cuban highball of white rum, lime, sugar, mint and soda water. Its exact origin is unclear; it is often linked to older Cuban drinks made with aguardiente, lime and mint, and it was well established in Havana bars by the first half of the 20th century.

The fruit Mojito is a modern idea. When the Mojito became one of the most ordered drinks in Europe and North America in the 2000s, bartenders started muddling berries, passion fruit or watermelon into it. The Blueberry Mojito is one of the most successful of those twists, because the berries add colour and gentle sweetness without drowning the mint. There is no known creator. An alcohol-free version is given below as a variation.

Bartender tips

  • Muddle the berries firmly but the mint only lightly: crushed mint stems turn bitter.
  • Out of season, thawed frozen blueberries work well and give even more colour.
  • For parties, make a blueberry syrup in advance by simmering blueberries with sugar and water, then strain it.

Variations

Blueberry Mojito alcohol-free
Leave out the rum and top with more soda water or a dry lemonade. Add a few extra blueberries for body.
Classic Mojito
The original without berries: white rum, lime, sugar, mint and soda.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use frozen blueberries?

Yes. Let them thaw a little first so they are easy to muddle.

Which rum is best?

A light, clean white rum. Aged rum works too, but it pushes the mint into the background.

How do I make it alcohol-free?

Skip the rum and top up with more soda water; everything else stays the same.
