Shape and purpose
A wine glass has a stem and a rounded bowl that narrows slightly toward the rim. Sizes range widely, from around 250 ml for small white wine glasses to 500 ml or more for large red wine glasses. The tapered bowl gathers aroma, and the stem keeps hands away from the drink.
Which drinks belong here
Spritzes such as the Aperol Spritz and the Hugo, sangria and other wine drinks, vermouth and soda, and some gin and tonics served in the Spanish style with lots of ice and aromatic garnishes.
Tips
- Use a large glass for spritzes so there is room for plenty of ice.
- Add ice first, then the ingredients, and the sparkling part last.
- Garnish with citrus slices, herbs or fruit placed inside the glass, where they can release aroma.
- Chill the glass if possible, especially on warm days.
