The copper mug frosts the moment the ice goes in, and the ginger beer brings real heat on the tongue. Fresh lime cuts through, and a sprig of mint adds a cool scent every time you lift the mug.

Virgin Moscow Mule
Taste
Spicy, tangy and refreshing, with a ginger burn, bright lime acidity and lots of fizz. Dry or sweet depending on the ginger beer.
History and origin
The Moscow Mule is usually traced to Los Angeles in the early 1940s, when vodka was still little known in the United States and ginger beer was a hard sell. The combination of vodka, ginger beer and lime, served in a copper mug, became one of the drinks that made vodka popular in America.
In the Mule the vodka mostly adds strength and dryness, while the flavour comes from ginger and lime. That makes it one of the easiest cocktails to turn alcohol-free: a good, spicy ginger beer and plenty of fresh lime carry the drink on their own. The virgin version is now a standard on many bar and restaurant menus.
Bartender tips
The ginger beer makes or breaks the drink: choose one with a strong, natural ginger bite.
A copper mug keeps the drink colder, but a highball glass works just as well.
For more depth, add 10 ml of fresh ginger syrup or two slices of fresh ginger.
Variations
Virgin Kentucky Mule (twist)
Add a few drops of vanilla and a dash of smoked tea for a bourbon-like warmth.
Cucumber Mule (twist)
Muddle three slices of cucumber in the mug before adding ice.
Berry Mule (twist)
Muddle a handful of raspberries or blackberries with the lime.
Frequently asked questions
Is ginger beer alcoholic?
Commercial ginger beer is sold as a soft drink and is alcohol-free or has only a negligible trace from fermentation. Check the label if you need to be sure.
Do I need a copper mug?
No. It is traditional and keeps the drink very cold, but any highball glass works.
Can I use ginger ale instead?
Yes, but ginger ale is milder and sweeter. Add extra lime or fresh ginger to compensate.
