Taste

Creamy, custard-like and sweet with vanilla, bright lime and lively fizz. Light in alcohol.

History and origin

The Snowball is a British classic built on advocaat, the Dutch egg liqueur made from egg yolks, sugar and spirit. It became a fixture of British Christmas parties and pubs in the decades after the Second World War and reached the peak of its popularity around the 1970s.

For a long time it was considered old-fashioned, the drink of grandmothers and office parties, but it has made a comeback as a nostalgic festive serve. The formula has barely changed: advocaat, a little lime and a generous top of clear, sparkling lemonade.

The name simply describes its look: a pale, foamy, snow-coloured drink.

Bartender tips

  • Stir the advocaat briefly with the lime juice before topping so it mixes evenly.
  • Use a clear, sparkling lemonade; cloudy lemonade makes it heavy.
  • A small grating of nutmeg on top adds a festive spice note.

Variations

Snowball with brandy
Add 15 ml brandy for a stronger, warmer version.
Snowball with prosecco
Top with prosecco instead of lemonade for a drier, festive sparkling version.

Frequently asked questions

What is advocaat?

A Dutch liqueur made from egg yolks, sugar and spirit, thick and custard-like, known in Germany as Eierlikör.

How strong is a Snowball?

It is a light drink. Advocaat is usually around 15 to 20 percent alcohol, and the lemonade dilutes it well.

Can I use lemon-lime soda instead of lemonade?

Yes. Clear lemon-lime soda is the closest substitute for British lemonade.
