Shandy
Crisp, lightly bitter and lemony-sweet with lively carbonation. Roughly half the strength of the beer used.
Shandy is the short form of shandygaff, a British mix that was already known in the nineteenth century. Originally it often meant beer with ginger beer or ginger ale; over time lemonade became the usual partner, and in Britain today a shandy simply means beer and lemonade.
The same idea exists all over Europe. In Germany it is called Radler in the south and Alsterwasser in the north, and in France panaché. A popular Bavarian story claims an innkeeper invented the Radler in the 1920s for a crowd of thirsty cyclists, but beer and lemon soda mixes are older than that account.
The proportions are flexible, but half and half is the classic starting point.
