Shape and purpose
Pint glasses are tall and slightly tapered or have a bulge near the top. The British imperial pint holds 568 ml, while an American pint is 473 ml. The generous volume leaves room for beer, mixer and a proper head of foam.
Which drinks belong here
Beer cocktails such as the Black Velvet, shandies and Radlers, the Michelada, as well as some long punches and tall sodas.
Tips
- Rinse the glass with cold water before pouring beer; a clean, wet glass gives a better head.
- Tilt the glass at about 45 degrees and straighten it as it fills, so the foam forms at the end.
- Add spirits or juice first, then top with beer.
- The mixing tin of a Boston shaker is often paired with a pint glass, so many bars use the same glass as a mixing vessel.
