Moonwalk

Pale gold and fine-bubbled, with the bitter-sweet snap of grapefruit and a faint perfume of roses rising from the glass. It is a light, elegant sparkler with one of the best stories in bar history.

Moonwalk

Taste

Crisp and citrusy with bitter grapefruit, sweet orange and a delicate floral note. Light-bodied, dry and lively.

History and origin

The Moonwalk was created by Joe Gilmore, the long-serving head bartender of the American Bar at the Savoy Hotel in London, to mark the Apollo 11 Moon landing in July 1969. Gilmore had a habit of creating drinks for famous events and guests, and this one became his best known.

A popular story holds that the Moonwalk was the first drink Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin enjoyed after returning to Earth. The account is often repeated but hard to verify, and it is best treated as part of the drink's legend. The recipe itself is simple and precise: grapefruit juice and orange liqueur, a few drops of rose water, and champagne to finish.

Bartender tips

  • Rose water is very potent; use a dropper or a few dashes from a bitters bottle and taste before adding more.
  • Pink grapefruit gives a softer, fruitier drink; white grapefruit a drier, more bitter one.
  • Grand Marnier adds a cognac richness that suits champagne well; triple sec gives a cleaner, lighter result.

Variations

Grapefruit Mimosa
An easy twist: skip the liqueur and rose water and mix grapefruit juice with champagne in equal parts.
Crémant Moonwalk
Replace champagne with a dry crémant for a more affordable version.

Frequently asked questions

Who invented the Moonwalk cocktail?

Joe Gilmore, head bartender at the American Bar of the Savoy in London, created it for the Apollo 11 Moon landing in 1969.

Can I leave out the rose water?

You can, but it gives the drink its signature floral note. Without it you have a simple grapefruit champagne cocktail.

Is the Moonwalk strong?

No. It is mostly champagne and juice with a little liqueur, so it is a light sparkling drink.
