Four Score

Cognac brings dried fruit and oak, Lillet adds a citrusy wine lightness, and yellow Chartreuse lays honey and alpine herbs over the top. Stirred ice cold, it is a slow, contemplative drink.

Four Score

Taste

Honey, saffron and herbs from the Chartreuse, orange peel and white wine from the Lillet, and dried fruit from the cognac. Rich, silky and strong.

History and origin

The Four Score is a spirit-forward cognac cocktail in the style of the aromatic, stirred drinks that pair brandy with fortified wine and herbal liqueur. Its creator and date of origin are not reliably documented, and it is sometimes listed with different proportions.

It shares its logic with classics such as the Widow's Kiss (apple brandy, Bénédictine, yellow Chartreuse): a brandy base seasoned with herbal liqueur. Here a lighter aperitif wine takes the place of a second liqueur and softens the whole. Lillet Blanc, a Bordeaux aperitif of wine and citrus liqueurs, gives it its bright, slightly bitter lift.

Bartender tips

  • Keep Lillet in the fridge once opened and use it within a few weeks.
  • Yellow Chartreuse is softer and sweeter than green; green makes a much more intense drink.
  • A VSOP cognac gives enough depth without overpowering the Lillet.

Variations

Green version
Use 10 ml green Chartreuse instead of yellow for a sharper, more herbal result.
Easy twist: Cocchi Americano
Swap Lillet for Cocchi Americano for more bitterness.

Frequently asked questions

Should the Four Score be shaken?

No, it contains only spirits, wine and liqueur, so stirring gives the best clarity and texture.

Can I use brandy instead of cognac?

Yes, any good grape brandy works, though cognac gives the most elegant result.

What does Lillet taste like?

Lillet Blanc is a lightly sweet wine aperitif with notes of orange, honey and a gentle bitterness.
