Cold black tea brings tannin and a gentle bitterness, fresh lemonade adds sweetness and bright acidity. Poured over plenty of ice, the two meet somewhere between thirst quencher and aperitif.

Arnold Palmer
Taste
Refreshing and not too sweet: tannic black tea, tart lemon and a clean finish. The balance shifts easily with the ratio.
History and origin
The drink carries the name of Arnold Palmer, the American professional golfer who won seven major championships. Palmer himself said he mixed iced tea and lemonade at home long before the drink had a name. One popular account says a woman at a golf club overheard him ordering it and asked for "that Palmer drink", and the name stuck from there.
Whatever the exact moment, the combination was known across the United States by the 1960s and later became a canned and bottled product carrying Palmer's name and likeness. In the US it is also often simply called a half and half.
Bartender tips
Brew the tea a little stronger than usual so the ice does not water it down.
Homemade lemonade (lemon juice, simple syrup and still water) gives the cleanest flavour.
Palmer is said to have preferred more tea than lemonade; try 3 parts tea to 1 part lemonade for a drier version.
Variations
John Daly
The adult version with vodka, named after another golfer. Not alcohol-free.
Peach Palmer (twist)
Replace a quarter of the lemonade with peach nectar or add 10 ml peach syrup.
