Cocktails served in a Tiki mug
The tiki mug is a ceramic vessel shaped like a carved figure, a skull, a coconut or another island motif, and it is the signature glassware of tiki culture. This page lists every recipe served in a tiki mug, from the Zombie to the Mai Tai and the Painkiller. You also learn how to handle the opaque mug, which hides colour, and how to make the drink stand out anyway.

Shape and purpose
Tiki mugs are usually ceramic and come in many shapes and sizes, commonly around 350 to 500 ml. They became popular with the American tiki bars of the mid-twentieth century and are now collected in their own right. The thick ceramic insulates well, so drinks with crushed ice stay cold for a long time.
Which drinks belong here
Tiki drinks built or flash blended with crushed ice: the Zombie, the Mai Tai, the Navy Grog, the Painkiller and many rum punches.
Tips
- Since you cannot see the drink, garnish generously at the top: a mint bouquet, pineapple leaves, a citrus shell or an edible flower.
- Pack the mug with crushed ice before pouring or dump the shaken drink with its ice inside.
- Serve with a straw.
- Chill the mug in the freezer beforehand.
- Rinse and dry ceramic mugs well; check that they are dishwasher-safe.
