Cocktails served in a Mug
A heat-resistant mug or glass with a handle is the right vessel for hot drinks: Hot Toddy, mulled wine, hot buttered rum, spiked hot chocolate and many others. This page lists all recipes served in a mug and gives practical advice on preheating, safe temperatures and keeping the aroma of spices and spirits in the cup rather than letting it escape into the air.

Shape and purpose
Mugs for hot drinks are made of ceramic or heat-resistant glass, with a handle so you can hold them comfortably. Sizes usually range from about 200 to 350 ml. Glass mugs show off the colour of the drink and layers of cream, ceramic keeps heat a little longer.
Which drinks belong here
Hot Toddies, mulled wine and other hot punches, hot buttered rum, hot chocolate or coffee with a spirit, and warm alcohol-free drinks such as spiced apple juice or tea punches.
Tips
- Preheat the mug with hot water and pour it out before adding the drink.
- Use only glass that is marked as heat resistant; ordinary glass can crack.
- Heat the base first and add the spirit off the heat, so the alcohol does not evaporate.
- Serve at around 70 degrees Celsius, hot enough to warm but not so hot that it burns.
