Hennchata

Horchata, the milky rice and cinnamon drink sold at taquerias, meets the dried fruit and oak of Cognac. It tastes like a cold, boozy rice pudding with a spiced finish.

Hennchata

Taste

Creamy, sweet and cinnamon-spiced, with dried fruit and a gentle warmth from the Cognac. Light and very smooth.

History and origin

The Hennchata, a blend of Hennessy and horchata, is a recent drink from the Mexican-American food scene in California. It is often traced to a Mexican restaurant in San Jose in the 2010s, where it was served with the Cognac bottle upended in the glass so it slowly drained into the horchata. That presentation spread quickly on social media and made the drink famous far beyond the city.

At heart it is a simple creamy highball, built on horchata, the sweet rice and cinnamon agua fresca that is a staple of Mexican cuisine. Spirits and horchata were paired before, but this version gave the idea a name.

Bartender tips

  • Homemade horchata tastes much fresher than bottled: soak rice with a cinnamon stick overnight, blend with water, strain and sweeten.
  • Shake the horchata well before pouring, as it settles.
  • A VS Cognac is fine; older Cognacs get lost under the rice and cinnamon.

Variations

Rum and horchata
Easy twist: dark rum instead of Cognac for a more caramel-heavy drink.
Frozen Hennchata
Blend the Cognac and horchata with crushed ice for a thick, slushy version.
