Buttery Nipple
Taste
Very sweet, creamy and buttery with a caramel finish. Low to medium strength for a shot.
History and origin
The Buttery Nipple is a party shooter that became popular in American bars in the 1980s and 1990s, the era of cheeky shot names and brightly flavored schnapps. Butterscotch schnapps had become a common back bar bottle by then, and pairing it with Irish cream was an obvious match.
No creator or bar is reliably recorded. The drink belongs to the family of layered shots, alongside the B-52 and the Slippery Nipple, where the fun lies in floating one liqueur over another. Some bars shake the two with ice instead and serve it as a chilled shooter, which trades the look for a smoother, colder sip.
Bartender tips
Chill both liqueurs: cold Irish cream layers more cleanly.
Pour slowly and let the stream run down the inside of the glass for a sharp line.
Serve the shot straight away, as the layers blur over time.
