Cocktails served in a Snifter
The snifter, also called a brandy balloon, is a short-stemmed glass with a wide bowl that narrows toward the rim. It is made for aged spirits and for a small number of rich cocktails served warm or at room temperature. This page lists all recipes served in a snifter and explains how its shape concentrates aroma and why you should hold it differently from other stemmed glasses.

Shape and purpose
A snifter has a short stem and a large, round bowl with a narrow opening, often holding 250 to 400 ml although it is filled with only a small amount. Swirling releases aroma into the bowl, and the narrow rim channels it toward the nose.
Which drinks belong here
Brandy, cognac and aged rum served neat, and rich short drinks such as the French Connection, the B and B or brandy-based after-dinner drinks.
Tips
- Pour a small serving of about 30 to 50 ml. The large empty space is what gathers the aroma.
- Unlike most stemmed glasses, a snifter is traditionally cupped in the palm so the warmth of your hand gently warms the spirit.
- Do not heat the glass over a flame; this drives off alcohol vapor and dulls flavour.
- Swirl gently and let the drink rest a moment before the first sip.
