Shape and purpose
A julep cup is a straight-sided or slightly tapered metal cup without a handle, usually holding about 300 to 400 ml. Metal conducts cold, so a cup full of crushed ice quickly develops a layer of frost on the outside.
Which drinks belong here
The Mint Julep with bourbon, sugar and mint, other juleps made with brandy or rum, Smashes and many drinks served over crushed ice.
How to build a julep
- Gently press fresh mint leaves with syrup in the bottom of the cup. Do not shred them, or they turn bitter.
- Add the spirit and fill the cup with crushed ice.
- Stir or churn with a bar spoon until the outside frosts, then top with more ice to form a dome.
- Garnish with a large bunch of mint next to a short straw so you smell the mint with every sip.
Tips
Hold the cup by the rim or base; warm fingers leave marks in the frost.
