Shape and purpose
The margarita glass has a stem and a broad bowl that usually steps down into a smaller lower section. The wide rim offers plenty of space for salt or sugar, and the large volume, often 250 ml or more, suits frozen drinks that need room.
Which drinks belong here
Margaritas shaken and served up, frozen Margaritas and Daiquiris, and other blended fruit drinks.
How to rim the glass
- Rub a lime wedge along the outer edge of the rim only.
- Dip the outside edge into a plate of coarse salt or sugar, turning the glass.
- Tap off the excess. Salt on the inside falls into the drink.
- Rimming only half the glass lets each sip be taken with or without salt.
Tips
A shaken Margarita of about 100 ml can look lost in a large margarita glass. Many bartenders serve it in a coupe or over ice in a rocks glass instead. Keep the large glass for frozen versions.
